A pond pump must suit both the volume of water in your pond and the flow requirements of your filter. This is especially important with pressurised filters.

THE TWO FIGURES THAT MATTER
Never choose a pump from pond size alone.
The pump has two jobs: circulate enough water for the pond and deliver a flow that the filter can safely and effectively process. The correct answer is controlled by whichever requirement is more restrictive.
Check the filter manufacturer’s recommended and maximum flow. A pressure filter must not simply be connected to the largest available pump.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION ADVICE
Raise the pump above the bottom of the pond.
We recommend supporting the pump above floor level rather than placing it at the deepest point. If a hose splits, a return is displaced in high winds or a connection leaks, a pump sitting on the floor can continue pumping until the pond is virtually empty. Raising it leaves a reserve of water for the fish.
SET THE FLOW FROM THE BEGINNING
Fish Mate pond pumps have controllable flow rates.
Use that control properly. Start by checking the filter’s stated flow range, then allow for the real losses caused by vertical lift, hose length, narrow hose, bends and restrictions. Set the pump to provide the required flow at the filter—not simply to run flat out.

The brand does not have to match—but the flow specification must.
Fish Mate pumps may be suitable for many commonly sold pressure filters, including ranges such as Hozelock Bioforce Revolution and Oase FiltoClear. That does not mean every pump suits every model. The actual delivered flow must stay within the filter manufacturer’s stated limit after head and hose losses.
Match against the exact Bioforce model and its published maximum flow. Do not rely on the pond-size number in the product name.
FiltoClear models have model-specific flow and pressure limits. The UK FiltoClear 13000, for example, states a maximum flow of 9,000 litres per hour.
Check the instruction book or rating plate. If the permitted flow cannot be confirmed, ask the filter manufacturer before connecting the pump.
